Rising Rave Culture: Its Trending Qualities in Today’s Society

From flamboyant underground parties to exotic and unique festivals, the rave culture has progressed a lot since its beginnings in the 90s. Being mainly known by its unique music style and usage of elicit drugs, the rave culture does not stop there as it has become today a whole mentality behind the EDM music industry.

Rave culture has been around for more than a decade and has undergone many transformations over the years. Emerging from the American youth culture in the late 1980s, it has always been heavily commercialized, making up a significant portion of the youth entertainment business today. Today, rave culture is synonymous with the lifestyle surrounding EDM, with genres like Big Room, Hardstyle, Trance, and Techno being popular among enthusiasts. The culture revolves around the ideals of Peace, Love, Unity, Respect (PLUR) and is centered around dance parties that feature fast-paced, electronic music and accompanying light shows.

The rave culture has become more popularized over the years, with rave fashion becoming a trend in 2023. A new report by Pinterest, "Pinterest Predicts 2023," has identified and analyzed future trends, with rave culture and fashion being among them. Pinterest claims that its platform attracts 400 million people each month and has accurately predicted 80% of cultural trends over the last three years.

According to the report, "rave culture" is on the rise, with searches for "house music outfits" and "techno style" increasing significantly. The phrase "Berlin rave fashion" saw a search boost of 250%, while "music mixer” increased by 115% and "rave party aesthetic" by 35%. The report attributes this trend toward rave style to Gen Z and Millennials recovering from over two years of lockdown, who will take over nightclubs, warehouses, and house parties all over the globe.

While the report only covers data from September 2020 to September 2022, it highlights the potential for rave culture to become more mainstream. It remains to be seen whether promoters and venues will take inspiration from Pinterest for their next events, or if other countries besides Berlin will experience a surge in rave culture searches.

Rave culture and fashion are predicted to trend in 2023, with Pinterest's report identifying it as one of the future trends to watch out for. As the world recovers from the pandemic, it is not surprising that people are looking to embrace new trends and lifestyles. This creates an excellent opportunity for EDM enthusiasts, DJs or producers, to explore new musical genres, fashion styles and event decor, for the emergence of this upcoming subculture, which has the potential to create new exciting possibilities in the EDM world with present generations.
